The Westwood Mixed Doubles Team (affectionately known as the Eviscerators!) season ended on a high note Saturday March 28th at the Westwood Tennis Center as we swept the Viva La Cienega team 3-0, albeit with one of the individual match wins coming be way of default. Many thanks to Jenny Eskenazi, Belinda Rungsea, Stacey Fong and Julie Morgan for coming out to make the scene and root the team on.
In #1 slot, Cavin Kindsvogel & Patricia Buchanan beat Nicholas Tracz & Jennifer Fisher, 6-2, 6-2. This was Cavin & Patricia's long overdue start in the #1 slot and they did not disappoint. In spite of Nick's big service game, this match was never really in doubt. Jen Fisher was game and all, but certainly no match for Patricia, who cemented her reputation as a hard-hitting, fearless wunderkind. I can't wait to see Cavin and Patricia play in the post-season...good times ahead, you two - great job!
In the #2 slot, Jordi Matsumoto & Amy Hackett eviscerated Matt Wilkinson & Monica Keller, 6-2, 6-1. In Matt and Monica's defense, both are 3.5 rated players who were simply overmatched on this day. And, if it weren't for Amy first service game in the 1st set when she chose to serve into the sun without her sunglasses on, this may have well been a 1 and 1 outing. Anyway, I was very happy to see Jordi make his Eviscerator debut today - he and Amy make a terrific duo out there!
In the #3 slot, Greg Choa & Jenny Eskenazi will get the credit for the cheap 6-0, 6-0 default win in this slot as Viva La Cienega captain Jana Conley was unable to conjure up a 3rd male player today. I got the call yesterday that this was to be the case and, frankly, couldn't have been happier as Peter was out with the flu, Clint (Jenny's regular partner) had a friend in town and was generally unavailable, and I was suffering the effects of a severe head cold.
Of course, this didn't stop me from celebrating our win today with the rest of the team in attendance today, as we cracked a bottle of Perrier-Jouet champagne in front of the WTC pro shop to celebrate our division clincher. A very special thank you is in order to Stacey and everyone else who contributed to my very sweet gift certificate at the Tennis Warehouse - that was really very nice. Many thanks also to WTC head pro and GM Sameer Gavankar for all his support this season. He and I will be setting up a special team doubles/live ball clinic in advance of out date in the Sectionals, sometime during the week of May 25th, to help us prepare for our next set of matches - more details to follow. Louis and Kevin, rest up and get better you two! We're going to need you healthy, ready, and able come late May.
Great season, everyone! It's been an honor and a privilege to captain this team. Once the schedule for the USTA Mixed Doubles Division Sectionals in Long Beach is released, I will get all that info to you so that we can figure out our next steps in advance of our next big date in Long Beach on the weekend of May 29-31.
